Earth Day: EarthFest, Walk for the Earth 2011 (Metroparks Zoo)

Earth Day Cleveland Earth Day Coalition artist Ralph Solonitz

If you want to celebrate Earth Day in Cleveland, OH, the best place to be is the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for two events run by the Earth Day Coalition, EarthFest and Walk for the Earth.  This year is the 41st anniversary of Earth Day, which Clevelanders of all stripes take quite seriously.  Cleveland is a green city, well on its way to making our region a healthier, greener place for all of to live.

EarthFest has been going on since 1990, a festival highlighting the growing  environmental community of Northeast Ohio. This celebration of collective efforts to restore ecological health is geared toward educating and inviting the general public to take part in the sustainability movement. Between 10,000 and 50,000 people attend EarthFest each year, which is Ohio’s largest environmental education event and the longest running earth day celebration in the United States.

This is a family event, with lots of go green exhibits and interactive fun. Activities go on all day in the areas of Renewable Energy, Green Home Improvement, Local and Organic Foods, Clean Transportation, Eco-Family Activities, Environmental Science, and Health and Fitness.  There is also live music and lots of great food choices.

The Earth Day Coalition’s 22nd annual Walk for the Earth is will also be held on on Sunday, April 17, 2011.  You can support Earth Day Coalition’s year round environmental education, action and leadership programs in 2011 by walking 6 miles through the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Brookside Park, or biking to the Zoo from four community locations on Earth Day.

There is still plenty of time to join in and participate in both these events as a leader, sponsor, or just a participant.  For more information about EarthFest, and/or Walk for the Earth 2011, call 216-281-6468.

Cleveland International Film Festival Continues to Grow in Its 35th Year

12 Years (Germany) Cleveland International Film Festival

The Cleveland International Film Festival run by Cleveland Film Society is in its 35th landmark year this year.  It has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1977 at the Cedar Lee Theatre in Cleveland Heights, OH.  The first year, the Cleveland International Film Festival showed eight films and drew a few thousand people.  This year’s festival will draw approximately 75,000 people to downtown Cleveland.

In the days when Clevelander Jon Forman started his vision of an international film festival, studies showed that having a regional film festival in Cleveland was doomed to failure.  It took a lot of work to get the organization going, and keep it on the course it has continued on, but the 35th anniversary of the original start shows that indeed, the Cleveland International Film Festival has made it.

A great part of the success of the festival is due to the diligence of Jon Forman, his drive and insight, and faith in the Cleveland film going audience.  He has built a brand in the Cleveland International Film Festival.

This is a great achievement in an era when more and more films are being watched at home, from dvds, or downloaded from the internet.  There is something to be said for setting a trend of going out to the movie theater, and making an event out of the watching of films.  It is true that the films that you can see at the film festival are unique, and hard to find elsewhere.  Most of them may not be available for general viewing due to their budget or just because they are so new.

Part of the Cleveland International Film Festival is the social aspect.  It is the one time of year that you can interact with other film festival fans, and discuss the merits of international films, directors, and other film esoterica.  In addition, it is an Event with a capital E, due to the well organized crew that runs it, and the various ways that they have added to the festival each year.  This year, the venues will expand with films shown at Shaker Square Cinemas, the Cedar Lee Theatre, Capitol Theatre, and Plaza Cinemas.

Tower City Arts Festival (Downtown)

Tower City Arts Festival 2009

If you are looking for a fun and eclectic place to shop for unique handmade items this March, one of the best places to visit is the Tower City Arts Festival which coincides with the Cleveland International Film Festival in downtown Cleveland at Tower City Center on Public Square.

The Tower City Arts Festival is run by NorthCoast Promotions, Inc.’s Lisa Nemeth, and was started in 2008 as a benefit for both film festival goers, and regular downtown employees and residents.  If you are downtown to watch films, then browsing the artist booths at the art festival is the perfect way to spend time in between movies, and you can take home a souvenir of Cleveland that is one of a kind.

The Tower City Arts Festival can be found inside Tower City Center with booths placed in and around the first or main floor mostly gathered around the main Tower City fountain.  Vendors will be open for shopping both weekends of the film festival from 12 to 8 Friday and Saturday, and 12 to 5 on Sunday, as well as a few days during the week.

To give you an idea of what you can look forward to seeing at the Tower City Arts Festival, you can see by this list of vendors that it will be an eclectic mix of items from many different art varieties.  Artist vendors will include Lake Erie Artists Gallery, Celebrative Art, Treasures in Glass, Posch and Gulyas Silversmiths, Dragon Fly Designs, Planet Egg, fluxusmetalworks, Grampa’s Woodcrafts, Cheryl Lee Designs, and vendors who are not artists like Cecilia’s Sweet Delights, and omstone Aromas.

Arts Festival visitors will be able to try on beautiful jewelry, taste some yummy treats, as well as find beautiful decorative items for their homes.  Vendors will change over the days of the art festival, some will only be there one weekend while others will be there for the entire time of the festival.  Definitely a good time to find gifts for friends and family at home, upcoming birthdays, or just because you can’t live without it gifts.

For more information on the Tower City Arts Festival, call NorthCoast Promotions, Inc. at 216-570-8201.

Herald to Spring: 2010 St. Patrick's Day

One of the biggest events to attend in March in Cleveland, OH is the big St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown Cleveland.  The parade draws thousands of people downtown every year, both visitors and locals to celebrate being Irish, even if they are not Irish the rest of the year.  It is a boisterous crowd filled with families, children of all ages, and grownups who should know better.  The tricky thing is knowing whether the weather will cooperate but since that is a daily issue in Cleveland, most people ignore the weather and come downtown for the parade rain, snow, or shine.

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is scheduled to start at 1:04 pm at the intersection of Superior Ave. and East 18th St.  The parade  will travel southwest on Superior Ave. to East Roadway, where it will head northwest on East Roadway for one block; and then it will head northeast on Rockwell Ave. The Parade ends at the intersection of Rockwell Ave. and East 6th St.

Last year’s parade drew a record of a record 13,500 marchers in 213 units.  Hundreds of thousands of people lined the parade route to see it.  The St. Patrick’s Day parade in Cleveland is felt by many to be the herald of spring.  This will be doubly true in 2011 after having such a bitter cold and snowbound winter.  If you do plan to see the parade, make sure to dress in layers to allow for weather changes and get to your spot early to make sure that you can see.  Tower City does open up extra bathrooms to accomodate the extra large crowds for the parade, and all of the stores will be open their regular hours for shopping or just to warm up if you need to go inside.

Parking will be at a premium, so it is best if you can take the RTA downtown, and get out at Public Square so that you do not have to worry about parking your car.  This is a family friendly event.  Lots of children are in the parade, and are watching it from the sidelines.

After the parade, you can continue celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at The Flat Iron Grill or Flannery’s, two nearby downtown Irish restaurants and pubs.

Quilts 2011 Winner by Mary Ellen Klima

Quilts 2011, one of Ohio’s finest quilt shows, is held this year from February 11 – March 23, 2011, at Lake Metroparks Farmpark in Kirtland, Ohio.  This is the 20th year for this awesome art show, showing everything from traditional bed quilts to contemporary wall art and apparel.  Although this is about 45 minutes east of downtown Cleveland, the Quilts 2011 show is an art show that is so rich in color and texture, that if you can find the time to go, you really should.

Although many people who quilt still use the designs and technique passed down by generations of quilters from long before the invention of the sewing machine, it is true that modern technology, and changing styles of art have introduced new ways to make quilts.  Quilts 2011 has on display many quilts of varying styles, sizes, and techniques that show off a multitude of creative ways to join fabric into a quilt.

This year’s show is exhibiting more than 200 quilted works. Quilts 2011 features works from internationally acclaimed visiting artists and a judged show of quilts completed by regional artists from Northeast Ohio and around the United States.

Whether you are a quilter yourself or not, you cannot fail to appreciate the artistry and hard work that it takes to make these incredibly beautiful quilt designs.  And having a quilt show during February and March when the weather in Cleveland is still quite cold seems oddly appropriate.

Quilts 2011 includes workshops and lectures, and visiting internationally acclaimed quilt artists.  For more information on Quilts 2011, call 440-256-2122 or 800-366-3276.
