Shaker Square Year Round Farmers Market

One of the best places to visit on a Saturday year round is the North Union Farmers Market’s Shaker Square Market.  During the spring, summer, and fall, the Shaker Square Farmers Market is set up in the center of Shaker Square.  The Square center is blocked off to traffic, and booths are set up on both sides of the street, so that pedestrians can walk and shop leisurely.

During the winter months, North Union has a Indoor Winter Farmers Market at Shaker Square that is currently in a space between The Shaker Square Popcorn Shop, and CVS in the northeast quadrant.

The winter market is the more unusual of the two Shaker Square Farmers Markets because it is one of the very few existing winter farmers markets.  The market is open from 9 am to 12 noon every Saturday, snow or shine, and you can find lots of fresh goodies for your pantry including mushrooms, winter vegetables, fresh meats, poultry and eggs, as well as some simply delicious prepared foods.  Some of these prepared foods are olive oils, nut butters, jellies, chutneys, and mustards, and that doesn’t even begin to list the baked goods.  Other foods that you can find at the winter market are beans and grains, and cheeses.  In addition to the food, there are often artists displaying their wares.  It is great place to buy local foods during the winter.

The rest of the year, the Shaker Square Farmers Market is much larger with the peak season being late summer and early fall.  The outdoor market is open every Saturday from 8 am to 12 noon, and if you want the very freshest produce, you need to get there early, as many dedicated shoppers are out in force during the first hour of the market.  In addition to what you can find at the indoor market, you can also buy freshly cooked crepes, breakfast tortillas, doughnuts, and sandwiches made to order, as well as every imaginable local variety of fresh produce depending on the growing season.  The outdoor market boasts a much more sizeable artist section, including jewelry made from Lake Erie Beach Glass, pottery, and tie dye clothing.  There is usually lots of foods to sample from fresh apples to goat cheese to fresh salsas and heirloom fruits and vegetable.
